Bassel is originally from Syria, where he was a pharmacist. His life changed in 2014 when the war started and he moved to Lebanon. There, he began working for various international organizations and nonprofits. He began working closely with the UNHCR, helping Syrian refugees and migrants. He also started volunteering in a summer camp for Syrian refugee kids, and the experience had a profound impact on him. After moving to Canada in 2016, he began volunteering with Rainbow Railroad with the PSR (The Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program) committee, as someone with lived experience as refugee. In 2017, he joined the Rainbow Railroad team full-time. Bassel speaks multiple languages, and is driven by a belief in fundamental human rights, equality and freedom for all.
